The test scores necessary for acceptance to universities that consider the ACT depend primarily on the degree of institutional selectivity. The highest ACT standards are represented by schools such as Princeton University (acceptance rate of 6.5%), which reports middle-50% ACT composite scores of 32-35 for its accepted students. The largest public research universities usually have mean scores slightly above or below 30, including the University of Texas-Austin (average ACT total score of 29 and acceptance rate of about 40%). Moderately selective schools expect ACT scores in the mid-20s, such as the University of Oregon, which lists its middle-50% ACT scores as 22-27 and has an acceptance rate of approximately 74%. Many of the less selective institutions are generally more flexible with their admissions practices. At the University of Nevada-Reno (80% acceptance rate), an ACT score of 22 or higher can sometimes compensate for lower GPAs. In all of these cases, scores that are higher than the reported averages will maximize the odds of admission.

Arturo B., originally from Wellington, New Zealand, is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University (bachelor of arts in history) and the University of Michigan (master of arts in educational studies).
